Co-Captain

Optimizing navigation with collective real-time data

Co-Captain transforms how vessels perceive and respond to real-time events and upcoming risks. By combining information from the global network of Orca AI–equipped vessels with external sources such as weather, traffic, and local regulatory data, it provides crews with a dynamic evolving overview of their route and timely alerts, enabling them to anticipate risks before they arise and make critical decisions with confidence.

How does Co-Captain work?

1 Events detection
2 Data processing
3 Dynamic and context-aware alerts

Events detection and validation

As vessels approach critical events, each Orca AI-equipped vessel acts as a node in a global maritime network, detecting and validating them in real time.

Data processing

Co-Captain captures data from ships across the Orca AI fleet that is then enriched in the cloud with external data such as weather, admiralty updates and vessel traffic information.

Dynamic and context-aware alerts

Alerts are sent to vessels on intersecting routes about live and upcoming risks.

Key benefits of Co-Captain

Early risk detection

Stay ahead of GPS spoofing, severe weather, piracy events and other navigational hazards with verified alerts that help crews prepare and respond.

Route-specific alerts

Get only timely alerts relevant to the vessel’s route, reducing bridge distractions and supporting faster action.

Centralized awareness

Get the latest  information about  emission zones, whale protected zones, speed limits, and other critical data from admiralty sources, delivered in one system.

Actionable notifications tailored to each vessel’s route

Congested waters

Live notifications from other Orca AI-equipped vessels show high traffic density and recent close encounters along your planned route. Both AIS and non-AIS targets, as well as precise location data, is included in these alerts, enabling speed to be reduced, course to be adjusted or an extra OOW to be assigned, in order to minimize the risk of collisions.

Severe weather

Live alerts warn bridge crews about severe weather that Orca AI-equipped vessels are encountering ahead. Alerts include Beaufort Scale readings and visibility conditions such as fog, so that crews can adjust course, reduce speed, secure cargo and make whatever preparations are necessary well before the vessel meets the rough conditions.

GPS spoofing and interference

Any GPS interference detected by other Orca AI vessels is relayed in real time, allowing crews to re-route or rely on alternative navigation methods. Warnings about areas prone to spoofing and interference are also sent.

Piracy activity and zones

Before entering piracy-prone areas, crews receive live alerts to activate security measures and increase surveillance. In addition, ships on the same route get instant notifications if other vessels have reported live pirate activity.

Whale-protected zones

Crews are reminded to adjust speed and follow environmental regulations when entering whale-protected areas to ensure compliance, avoid fines, and protect marine life.

SOG violation

SOG alerts enable crews to maintain speed limits as they prepare to enter regulatory zones. This supports compliance with company SMS policies, emission-control areas and environmental regulations, reducing the risk of fines and ensuring safe, efficient operations.

Notice to mariners

Orca AI-equipped vessels can report navigational hazards such as floating containers, buoy shifts, unmarked obstacles, ice, Man Overboard and pollution. Co-Captain also provides critical updates on temporarily closed or hazardous areas, as well as other special zones as detailed by local regulatory sources.

FAQs

How quickly are alerts shared between vessels in Co-Captain?
Alerts are shared in near real time. It takes less than 2 minutes from creation on one ship to display on another anywhere in the world.
How does the system avoid false positives?
Co-Captain validates events across multiple data cycles, checks for signal consistency, and reinforces the pattern using other Orca vessels and external sources before sending an alert.
What data sources power Co-Captain alerts?
Co-Captain merges onboard sensors (Radar, GPS, cameras, Gyro, echo sounder) with external sources, including IMO regulations, NOAA whale zones, piracy advisories, AIS-based route data set, NAVTEX, and more.
Is Co-Captain interoperable with existing bridge systems?
Yes. Orca AI already integrates with common bridge systems and reads data from GPS, echo sounder, radar, X-band, and most standard navigational sensors.
Will Co-Captain interfere with existing bridge systems?
No. Co-Captain runs in parallel and does not override ECDIS or any navigational equipment. It adds early context and dynamic risk information on top of existing systems.
