Golden Ocean Group, one of the world’s largest publicly listed dry bulk shipping companies, has launched a trial of Orca AI’s navigation platform across five of its vessels. This move reflects Golden Ocean’s deepening commitment to innovation, automation, and safer, more efficient operations at sea.
With maritime safety and situational awareness at the forefront, Golden Ocean is leveraging AI-powered navigation assistance to support bridge crews in congested waters, low-visibility environments, and other high-risk scenarios.
Driving Innovation on the Bridge
During the trial phase, Golden Ocean is exploring how Orca AI’s technology can:
- Reducing Collision Risks: Al-driven object detection helps Navigators anticipate and respond to potential threats more accurately.
- Optimizing Operational Efficiency: By analyzing historical and real-time voyage data, the system supports route optimization to improve fuel efficiency and reduce costs.
- Enhancing Safety in Challenging Conditions: ORCA Al assists navigation in adverse weather, nighttime operations cluttered by shore lights, and busy shipping lanes.
Captain Christopher G. Tejano, Master of the Golden Kennedy, described the impact:
“The Orca AI platform serves as an essential decision-support tool, complementing existing navigational equipment and enhancing our ability to navigate safely and efficiently. Overall, the integration of Orca AI has strengthened the reliability and security of our operations, providing greater confidence and peace of mind in daily navigation.”
3rd Officer Katrina B. Gabales, serving on the Golden Ginger, added:
“ORCA AI enhances safety by providing real-time monitoring of the vessel’s surroundings, helping detect potential hazards such as nearby vessels and obstructions that traditional radar may not always capture. This significantly improves overall situational awareness and reduces the risk of collisions or accidents.”
Enabling Safer, Smarter Voyages
Golden Ocean’s trial aims to evaluate how AI can serve as a meaningful support tool in the complex environments modern crews face, from cluttered ports to stormy conditions. The initiative aligns with the company’s broader push toward digital transformation and automation while maintaining high safety standards.
Innovation at Sea
Orca AI’s platform combines computer vision, machine learning, and sensor fusion to detect vessels and obstacles in real time, even in limited visibility. While Orca AI provides the tools, it’s forward-thinking companies like Golden Ocean that are leading the way in redefining maritime safety and operational excellence.
We’re proud to support Golden Ocean in their journey toward smarter, safer commercial shipping.
