Always on the lookout for safety innovation
Seaspan’s comprehensive digitalization strategy is designed to maintain its unique market position – where the corporation is neutral and works with everyone – and leverage its size to scale new digital technologies and reap the benefits at pace. Operational excellence, emissions data and reporting, and navigation safety are the three key areas beyond crew welfare that Seaspan Corporation poised for digital transformation.
-
Operational excellence
Deploy technologies that improve safety, reliability, and cost efficiency at scale.
-
Navigation safety
Support bridge teams with tools that enhance situational awareness, especially in low visibility and high-density environments.
-
Emissions data and reporting
Provide accurate emissions reporting for charterers, supported by consistent, vessel-level data.
Enhanced safety and less emissions leads to greater sustainability, socially and business-wise. We all want that.
AI-assisted situational awareness
Seaspan took a proactive, fleet-wide approach to improving navigational safety and operational efficiency, deploying Orca AI to standardize bridge decision-making, reduce close encounters, and optimize routing and speed across vessels.
Helping crews identify high-risk targets in high-density areas
Seaspan selected Orca AI’s SeaPod to give bridge crews a real-time digital lookout that enhances situational awareness through:
- AI-powered detection of small vessels (with or without AIS)
- Thermal + day cameras for low-visibility operations
- Early alerts when vessels approach SMS thresholds
- Unified view combining camera feeds, AIS, GPS, and ship sensors
Real-time visibility into navigation events and fleet performance
With FleetView, Seaspan’s shoreside teams can:
- Monitor live bridge video and receive critical alerts
- Track SMS and COLREGs compliance
- Analyze navigation trends across the fleet
- Pinpoint areas for improvement and share best practices
Orca AI is an intuitive and valuable tool for enhancing navigational awareness. It is extremely helpful in detecting ships under poor visibility conditions, and whether they pose a risk to navigation.
USD 100,000 saving per vessel per year due to reduction of collision avoidance maneuvers
Seaspan invested in Orca AI to strengthen navigation safety across a 200-ship fleet and validate the ROI of long-term technology partners. The results: vessels using Orca AI experienced fewer close encounters and fewer navigational deviations, reducing the need for collision avoidance maneuvers that increase fuel burn and disrupt schedules.
While safety gains are difficult to quantify financially, the operational impact was measurable. Ships equipped with Orca AI reduced fuel consumption by about USD 100,000 per vessel per year, equivalent to 500 metric tons of CO₂. Orca AI delivered both safer navigation and measurable efficiency gains at fleet scale.
